Rare coin silver swing handle strawberry basket HB Stanwood Boston 1850-55

This coin silver strawberry basket is a very unusual form of coin silver holloware. The basket has a helmet form with a triple oval base and has a wonderful repousse and chased design of strawberries, flowers, leaves and ribbon, and the handle has a nice leaf design. The basket is monogrammed on one side with the letters RSL, but is blank on the other side.

This basket was made by H.B. Stanwood & Co., silversmiths in Boston who were in business from 1850-1855. The piece is marked under the base with the marks H.B. STANWOOD & CO. BOSTON PURE SILVER COIN. A photo of the underside is shown, but the mark is somewhat worn, so it does not photograph well.

This piece is in excellent condition, with no dents or scrapes and it sits evenly on the base. The monogram and the mark have some wear from polishing.

The basket measures 6 1/2″ to top of handle, 5 5/8″ length of bowl and 3 3/4″ wide at the widest point.
